It is important to know that this Atsushi Nakajima is of a world where he never met the Armed Detective Agency nor was he ever influenced by them. He never joined the side of light to become someone who helps people, instead sinking in the darkness and becoming stained black. He becomes known as the White Reaper of the Port Mafia, a fearsome beast who annihilates anyone in his way who threatens the Port Mafia and his boss.
Behind the moniker of the White Reaper, Atsushi is a troubled, young man with a low self-esteem and finds himself cowardly. The reason why he finds little value in his life was because of the cruel mistreatment he faced while growing up in the orphanage. He was constantly abused and dehumanized by the caretakers and orphans. Punishments by superiors make him extremely nervous and agitated due to the harsh punishments the director of the orphanage put him through, and that fear still influences him in the present. No sooner than when he barely became an adult, he was kicked out of the only home he knew for being a waste of space, making him assume he was disposable.
Had Dazai not picked up this stray and given him a place in the Port Mafia, Atsushi may as well never learned what kindness could be. Therefore, he holds Dazai with such high respect, being ferociously loyal to him. He will attack anyone who threatens his boss’s life or those his boss finds a close associate. However, it does not mean he doesn’t fear his boss. He is well aware that there are consequences to not following the boss’s orders, which means going against the Port Mafia itself. Having once disobeyed the most important order Dazai issued, which was to never to return to the orphanage, the incident traumatized Atsushi with the murder of the orphanage director with blood on his hands. The guilt of that murder, along with the fear and disappointment of ever disobeying Dazai again terrifies him to the point that he must obey his boss’s orders or he would lose his place. Unfortunately, that fear contradicts with the director’s philosophy that was rooted into him that if he didn’t protect people, then he was unworthy of living. This puts Atsushi in a moral crisis, knowing one day it may contradict with Dazai’s orders but he chooses to turn a blind eye because he wants to validate his own existence with Dazai’s praise.
Fear is what ultimately shaped his entire life, from his childhood to the present, in his capacity as an agent of the Port Mafia. Atsushi is one you would call a ‘beast’ that instinctively moves by fear and causes fear. Having killed the orphanage director left Atsushi so afraid of death to see that man again, he became desensitized to any fear less than that trauma. It allows him to become a detached and coldhearted killer that can ruthlessly annihilate his enemies like a violent animal. Similar to an apex predator, he uses his animal instincts to assist his perception on the battlefield, calmly analyzing his prey to kill them. However, should he go against a strong opponent, his unmatched tenacity and desperation will show through, refusing to back down even when he is injured. He is fully aware his regenerative abilities heal him quickly and due to that, he will keep throwing himself at his enemy until one of them dies. The few survivors he has left behind and traumatized from encountering him, was where the origin of his nickname ‘White Reaper’ came from.
Despite being one of Port Mafia’s most dangerous killers, underneath his distant exterior, Atsushi can be kind and gentle. As he perceives Dazai saving him as an act of kindness, he also extends that same kindness to people close to him. One notable example is his friend Kyoka, telling her he would not leave her alone in the darkness when she failed to escape the mafia. He is adamant to stay by his friend’s side, because he doesn’t wish for her to feel despair and will assist them in fighting. He doesn't care if this calls him out for being kind-hearted as a murderer.
Off duty, Atsushi is a polite and pleasant person to talk to, but he keeps his distance for obvious reasons. However, he can empathize with people who went through similar hardships as him, like Akutagawa, being able to instantly connect with him in a brief conversation despite being strangers. Unfortunately though, he does not wish to establish any external relationships outside the mafia so it would not interfere with his duties. Orders are orders and should anyone become an obstacle to Atsushi, he will cut them down with no hesitation for the sake of the Port Mafia and Dazai. To him, in this alternate story, the Port Mafia is his world now and he will carry out any mission that is imperative to them.
Abilities:
Beast Beneath the Moonlight - This ability allows Atsushi to fully or partially transform into a tiger. He is able to change parts of his body as a tiger, gain claws, and enhance his keen animal senses. He also gains incredible strength and endurance and is able to regenerate and heal from serious wounds like a missing leg. In the BEAST universe, Atsushi is unable to fully control his ability and is forced to wear a very painful collar with thorns so he won’t lose control to the tiger.
Inventory:
1. Fancy watch - Gifted to him on his 18th birthday by the director, unable to break it and let go of his past. A reminder of his crime.
2. Handgun - Issued to him by the Port Mafia
